FACILITIES & AFFILIATIONS
A HOSPITAL WITHIN A HOSPITAL
The Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center includes 140 physicians providing primary care and 34 subspecialty services, with additional support from affiliated pediatric services including surgical specialists, anesthesia, pharmacy, radiology, emergency medicine, nutrition and 400+ pediatric nurses. Its 125 beds (out of the 760 beds in all of Albany Med) see 5,000 inpatient admissions, 1,200 PICU admissions, and 800 NICU admissions annually as well as 100,000 visits in our primary and specialty medical and surgical care clinics.
As the sole children’s hospital in the region, we are dedicated to the dual missions of educating our pediatric residents while caring for the seriously ill and injured children living in the 25 counties of eastern New York and western New England.
Premature and seriously ill infants receive life-saving care in our state-of-the-art NICU and PICU. Our PICU, Child Cancer Program, Pediatric AIDS Program and Congenital Heart Disease Program are the only ones of their kind in the region. Our Children’s Hospital is also a state and nationally-recognized Accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center, Sickle Cell & Hemoglobinopathy Treatment Center, Genetic & Metabolism Treatment Center, and Lead-Poisoning and Environmental Health Resource Center.
PRIMARY CARE EXPERIENCE
Our pediatric residency program offers a strong and continuously growing primary care experience. Primary care training consists of weekly continuity clinic sessions and annual ambulatory rotations. With the guidance of our expert general pediatrics faculty, residents develop their own patient panel and have the opportunity to follow children seen within the hospital, serving as their primary care physicians for these patients from birth onward.
Our outpatient ambulatory training is multidisciplinary, varied and takes place in the largest General Pediatrics practice in Northeastern New York. Our practice serves as the de facto home for all complex and critically ill children within a 3 hour radius and oftentimes receives pediatrician to pediatrician referrals. In addition to outstanding general pediatrics care, our ambulatory faculty also specialize in child abuse, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, adoption, weight loss, breast feeding, and lead toxicity.
THE REGION'S ONLY ACADEMIC HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER
Albany Medical Center is the only academic health sciences center in the 25 counties of eastern New York and western New England. It is guided by a strategic commitment to providing the region’s 3.4 million residents with high-quality medical education, biomedical research, and patient care. It comprises Albany Medical College, the Albany Medical Center Hospital, and our Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital. Joined within a single complex, the three components combine resources to provide advanced services in an extensive range of specialty and subspecialty areas.
The variety and complexity of cases seen at the Medical Center provide a rich learning environment for its academic community of medical and basic science students, residents, and fellows. In addition to housing the region’s only American College of Surgeon’s Certified Pediatric Trauma Program, a state-designated Regional Perinatal Center, a state-designated regional AIDS treatment center, the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders, as well as programs in childhood arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, and childhood kidney disease.
